-πλόος[edit]

This is listed both here and in Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/pleh₁-. Anyone know if it comes from just one of the two roots, or are they related? — Eru·tuon 23:09, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it could come from this root, since the Greek hiatus vowel can only reflect former w or y. This means we're dealing with a formation like *pl-o-yos or *pl-o-wos, but there's absolutely no evidence for any kind of o-suffix in PIE; suffixes were made primarily out of consonants. But a root *pleh₁- gives difficulties as well: *plVh₁-yos would result in Hellenic *plōyos regardless of the grade of the root, and this would not give the attested Greek. With -w- it would be no different. So I really don't know where the Greek suffix came from. The only thing I can think of is perhaps some root like *pley- or *plew- in o-grade. But that's just my own speculation. An Ancient Greek etymology dictionary could probably tell us more. —CodeCat 23:42, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
