This verb is onomatopoeic meaning to fry, to burst. The proposed meanings to yearn, to covet are all secondary. The meaning of the Slavic data in particular has emerged quite recently - even after the split of Common Slavic. In South Slavic Proto-Slavic *pražiti still means to fry, to roast, to burst. A similar semantic shift like in Polish pragnąć (to wish, to long for) has happened with Proto-Slavic *bažiti (to desire, to long for) (originally to bake).
