Etymology 1[edit]

Bücherregale

Of unknown origin. Perhaps derived from Middle Low German riōle or reōle (rack, frame, ditch).[1] Compare Dutch regel. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the form Regal existed alongside the form Real.
