Rhymes:English/ɑː(ɹ)mɪk[edit]

Should Rhymes:English/ɑːmɪk be merged into Rhymes:English/ɑː(ɹ)mɪk? — Sgconlaw (talk) 22:14, 16 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

No, we consistent distinguish rhymes with "(ɹ)" (indicating an /ɹ/ present in rhotic accents but not in nonrhotic ones) from rhymes without it (indicating no /ɹ/ in either rhotic or nonrhotic accents). —Mahāgaja · talk 08:49, 17 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mahagaja: hmmm, that hasn’t been my experience. I thought the whole point of the “(ɹ)” in parentheses was to indicate that it is pronounced in rhotic accents but not otherwise, so words pronounced both ways are placed on the same page. If this isn’t the case, then we will have pairs of pages with essentially the same words on both, as most of such words are pronounced rhotically in some accents (for example, General American) and non-rhotically in others (Received Pronunciation). — Sgconlaw (talk) 11:25, 17 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I would say that Rhymes:English/ɑːmɪk should be only for words like Islamic, which no one pronounces with /ɹ/, while Rhymes:English/ɑː(ɹ)mɪk should be only for words like karmic, which rhotic speakers pronounce with /ɹ/. Even though karmic and Islamic rhyme for nonrhotic speakers, they don't rhyme for rhotic speakers, so they shouldn't be on the same page, and the two pages shouldn't be merged. I just removed alexipharmic from Rhymes:English/ɑːmɪk because IMO it belongs only on Rhymes:English/ɑː(ɹ)mɪk. There's already a note on each page saying that words on the other page are also rhymes in nonrhotic accents. —Mahāgaja · talk 11:34, 17 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mahagaja: right, OK then. — Sgconlaw (talk) 12:58, 17 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
