Etymology[edit]

New Latin, Latinized from Old Norse rosmhvalr (walrus), from rosm (red, red-brown) + hvalr (whale). For the first element see Proto-Germanic *rustaz, though likely influenced by hross (horse); alternatively, from Finnish mursu.
