Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as de runa in 1139. Etymology unknown. Proposed derivations from Old Dutch *rûne (small valley), a hydronym or a personal name all fail to provide a satisfactory etymology.

See also Dutch Low Saxon Rune.
