Etymology 1[edit]

From Middle High German schīt, from Old High German scīt, from Proto-Germanic *skīdą. Cognate with German Scheit, English shide. The regular form is Schäit; that with -ee- was influenced by related scheeden (to divide). Related also with etymology 2 below.
