Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as in uilla schinneuelt in 1180. Likely a compound of dialectal schijn (land cleared for agriculture) and veld (field). A reading of the first element as the hydronym Schin (related to Old Dutch skīnan (shine, sparkle)) is less likely. Compare Schimmert, Schinnen and Schin op Geul.

See also Limburgish Sjilvend.
