Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as apud staveren in 1290. Likely derived from the plural of a term cognate to Old Saxon stavor (pole, stick) and Old English stæfer (pole, rod). A derivation from a compound composed of stave (wand, wooden pole) and heri (sandy ridge) is less likely. Compare Stavoren and Stavern.

  • IPA(key): /ˈstaː.vər.də(n)/
  • Hyphenation: Sta‧ver‧den
