Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as in stepele in 1450. Compound of an unclear first element and lo (light forest). One hypothesis interprets the first element as a derivation of Proto-Germanic *stapula (pole, stick). Alternative etymologies include a reading of the first element as a term cognate to Old English stêpel (high tower) or as Latin stipula (stalk, reed). Compare Stipdonk, Stiphout and Stiepel.
