From Middle High German sut, from Old High German *sut, from Proto-Germanic *sudą (“brew, soup”); related to sieden (“to boil”). Cognate with Old English ġesod (“cooking, boiling, seething”), Old Frisian soth (“cooking, boiling”), Danish sod, Icelandic soð.
