Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Romansch surmiran, from the region Surmeir in Albula Valley. The placename is interpreted to mean "above the wall," from sur (above) (a derivative of Latin supra (above)) + meir (wall) (from Latin murus). There is no corresponding Swiss German name, which instead uses Mittelbünden.
