Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Romansch surmiran, from the region Surmeir in Albula Valley. The placename is interpreted to mean "above the wall," from sur (“above”) (a derivative of Latin supra (“above”)) + meir (“wall”) (from Latin murus). There is no corresponding Swiss German name, which instead uses Mittelbünden.
