Swern oxidation (plural Swern oxidations)

  1. (chemistry) A chemical reaction whereby a primary or secondary alcohol is oxidized to an aldehyde or ketone using oxalyl chloride, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and an organic base such as triethylamine.
