Saterland Frisian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Swien (pig) +‎ -e- +‎ Flaask (meat). Compare German Schweinefleisch and English swineflesh.

The reduction -ie- > -i- is irregular. Fort (2015) explains this as being a result of the stress, which originally may have lain on the third syllable.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈsvɪnəˌflaːsk/
  • Hyphenation: Swin‧ne‧flaask

Noun[edit]

Swinneflaask n (uncountable)

  1. pork (type of meat)
