I am not sure of this romantic Irish etymology, this name seems to be typical anglo-saxon and has corresponding names in the other Germanic languages : Ansgar; Asgeir.. Yes, but it wasn't used anywhere until 1765. Mcpherson's book was a fake, of course, but it was based on characters of genuine Gaelic mythology. Maybe Mcpherson unconsciously - or deliberately - spelled the name in a way that would look familiar to English readers.
