Cognate with proto-Finnic ülä?[edit]

"Ülä" means "above" or "upper". Consider words in Hungarian felül - above, and "üldöz" - chase. Consider Finnish ylä/yli, and words from "yl-" such as ylhäällä - above, yllätys - surprise, yllyttää - incite, ylväs - noble, ylpeä - proud.) — This unsigned comment was added by 85.76.35.87 (talk).

No, the semantic gap "upper" ~ "to sit" makes little sense, and the Hungarian form would probably be more like *öl or *ől. Worth noting that in felül, fel means... "up". — surjection?09:10, 11 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
But on the page üle: "cognate with Finnish yli." (Ps. I've always wondered if not fel is not cognate with finnish "pääl-") — This unsigned comment was added by 85.76.35.87 (talk).
üle is Estonian, of course it's related to Finnish with that form. It's not Hungarian. fel being related to päällä is more plausible but not by much or probably enough to even deserve a mention on the page. — surjection?12:32, 11 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
