This is a word that I have heard at many a Greek restaurant when the waiter ignites a flambe dish. I've also heard it repeatedly in the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". After going to the Usenet group for Greeks and asking this question, then after doing a bit of web background search, this is what I've come up with.
