Directly from Latin?

[edit]

Does this Arabic term really derive from Latin rather than Greek? 173.89.236.187 15:48, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wanted to ask the same question. 1.) I checked a German and a Dutch dictionary; both of them mention Greek > Arabic > Spanish, but neither mentions Latin. 2.) A direct path Greek > Arabic would be much more likely than a detour Greek > Latin > Arabic -- unless, of course, there is some piece of evidence that Arabic cannot have borrowed directly from Greek. In that case, this evidence should be presented. 3.) The Arabic th-sound also speaks against Latin. 2.203.201.61 04:55, 13 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
