The etymology 1 is probably from Proto-Indo-European *gnebʰ- (“to press, tighten”), semantically similar to تنگ (tong, “carafe”), تنگ (tang, “a horse-girth; a strap for fastening a load”), and perhaps related to کنف (kanaf) or کنب (kanab, “hemp”). Also could be cognate with Persian obsolete words کنیف (kanif, kenif, “chamber pot”) (entered from western dialects) and نیفه (nife, “thong, strap”) (entered from eastern dialects), from the same Proto-Indo-European source.--Andronovo (talk) 12:09, 24 November 2020 (UTC) In another hypothesis, it can also be related to کیپ (kip, “tight, compact, close”), if it's not of the same Proto-Indo-European origin.
