Pronunciation[edit]

@AryamanA Is this bird really pronounced कौआ /kauā/? It sounds really odd to me. I suspect it is people confusing the /w/ and /v/ sounds here. Like, I strongly suspect they pronounce it /kauwā/ but write it as /kauā/. The pronunciations which I have heard are:

  • कउवा /kauvā/ (how I pronounce it)
  • कौवा /kauvā/ (some people pronounce it with a strong /v/)

and the final one which I think is how people who write it as कौआ pronounce it as:

  • कौवा /kauwā/ (some people pronounce it as a strong /w/ and maybe because they clearly differentiate between /w/ and /v/ in this case they write it using the wrong orthography as they don't think /v/ is the wright letter for it. Maybe.)

For example watch this video (y outu.be/huSrLkxWdsg?t=68) (remove the space from the link), the title is "कौआ और हंस" but in the video at the timestamp 1:08 you clearly hear him pronounce it as /kauwā/ (with a strong /w/) and not like कौआ.

@Itsmeyash31: This spelling certainly exists, but you are right it's not really pronounced kauā. I pronounce it the same as you. Wiktionary is descriptivist so we record spellings as they are found, you can see on Google for example कौआ gets twice as many results as कौवा. You can see the IPA on कौआ (kauā) which I think does a good job on showing the pronunciation. I believe this process is the same in भैया (bhaiyā), सैया (saiyā), etc. which are pronounced भइया, सइया. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 15:34, 22 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
