@Kutchkutch Dasa says the word comes from मधुमक्षिका (madhumakṣikā). Looks like the case for other cognates as well rather than independent compounds. Gotitbro (talk) 14:59, 15 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Goitbro: Sorry for the late reply. The Dasa dictionary is a bit outdated, and in several instances the etymology may not be exactly correct. Hindi मधुमक्खी (madhumakkhī) and the other cognates may have been created by analogy with Sanskrit मधुमक्षिका (madhumakṣikā), but Hindi मधुमक्खी (madhumakkhī) does not appear to have been inherited directly from मधुमक्षिका. धु would have been expected to change to , हु, , , etc or deleted entirely. According to Turner and McGregor, there is an dialectal Hindi word ममाखी/मुमाखी, but even for this word Turner says 'a new compound'. Kutchkutch (talk) 15:04, 11 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
