There is a vast literature pointing out that in Hebrew culture, the almond tree is considered the watchman who signals the arrival of the spring. It does so by being the first tree to bloom, usually at the beginning of February (at least in Israel). The watchman is the man who waches (Hebrew shaqed), usually from a high tower. The word for almond tree in Hebrew is shaqed, due to the analogy mentioned before. In the Bible there are many puns involving this couple of words (SEE Jeremiah and the almond branch). Tower in Hebrew is migdal. So, I suppose, the greek Amigdale is a borrowing from Hebrew migdalah (מִגְדָּל) SEE Strong's Hebrew #4026.
