Metathesis[edit]

@Fish bowl Hello, I imagine that I must not be grasping the terminology — may you please help to clear up my misunderstanding? I believe that metathesis means a swapping of letters around in a word — would that not render this term a simple adaptation of the English into Japanese? It seems to me that the sounds are all in their unchanged order, i.e. insuturumentaru. There appear to just be 'U's inserted to form moras as needed. Am I missing something in this understanding? Personally I always thought that トゥル was an unnatural transcription and perhaps from a misreading as insturmental; tr is a consonant cluster, so there is typically no need to use the conspicuously difficult syllable トゥ(ル) instead of ト(ル). But this is just my personal thought. —Fish bowl (talk) 01:53, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Fish bowl That's true, I guess it's hard to say exactly, considering トル would be more usual, but at the same time I believe that these days that the Japanese are wising up to the sounds of English, making fewer borrowings like ti → ち and more like てぃ, etc., more closely imitating the heard pronunciation. Anyway, thanks for explaining the thought behind it, Kiril kovachev (talkcontribs) 17:35, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
