呀 usage note problem: "多占地面呀"

I have been reading short Chinese prose essays for years, and although the usage note for 呀 as it stands right now unquestionably resembles the rule found at 现代汉语词典第7版 page 2 & 1502, 现代汉语规范词典3 p1507, & 现代汉语词典试用本 page 1177 concerning the usage of 呀, in my experience, 呀 has definitely not always been used in this way: it's not just used after syllables ending in a e o i and ü. I believe that this usage note should be altered in some way to reflect that reality, but I don't really know how to change it. Here's the example of a blatant contradiction to this rule that I saw today: in the early 80's, Jia Pingwa 贾平凹 in Chou Shi 丑石, when quoting his paternal grandmother's (mother of Jia Yanchun (贾彦春), probably from Shaanxi?) spoken statement from circa 1960 (about twenty years before Jia Pingwa writes the story), writes "这块丑石，多占地面呀,抽空把它搬走吧。" with corresponding pinyin "Zhè kuài chǒu shí, duō zhàn dìmiàn ya, chōukòng bǎ tā bānzǒu ba." This passage is included in 普通话水平测试实施纲要 from 2004, page 338-9 & 普通话培测试指要(湖北) page 191 etc etc. On Baidu Baike, 呀 is changed to 哟 https://baike.baidu.com/item/丑石/602092. http://dict.concised.moe.edu.tw/cgi-bin/jbdic/gsweb.cgi?o=djbdic&searchid=W00000040869 http://dict.revised.moe.edu.tw/cgi-bin/cbdic/gsweb.cgi?o=dcbdic&searchid=W00000010720 I will add more information when I see this type of usage again. I don't have an original copy of the author's work on hand, so this may be a typographical error found in all Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi books, but I doubt it. Although this written form of his grandma's speech was undoubtedly heavily influenced by Jia Pingwa's personal experience, if anyone is familiar with the topolects of Shaanxi and can guess about how Jia Pingwa and his grandmother would talk with with each other in 1960's Shaanxi, that might be useful to know too.
