@Poketalker: The こう reading for 弘 is the kan'on, suggesting a re-borrowing from a later stage and/or different dialect of Chinese. The ぼう reading for 法 suggests rendaku of the ordinary reading of ほう. Since ほう is both goon and kan'on, the name こうぼう might have been borrowed in its entirety. Although no Chinese dialect starts the reading of this second character 法 with /b/, I do see that both Mandarin and Cantonese have a coda consonant of /ŋ/ for the first character 弘 (hóng), followed by /f/ or /h/ as the initial consonant for the second character, and this combination may have led to the rendaku in the Japanese borrowing. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 18:06, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
