Synonyms

@Suzukaze-c, where did you find the info about the synonyms you added? I suspect that the -ō varieties may be readings for 鳭 (tō), listed in my local KDJ but apparently missing from Kotobank's. Are you sure about the -ao diphthongs? That could suggest a borrowing from a Chinese lect -- but the only one we show in the Chinese 鳭／𱉈 entry with a reading at all similar is Mandarin diāo, and that would probably be borrowed as じゃお or something like that. だお is also super weird for a local Japanese development, considering the historical kana spelling for 鳭 of たう, with a clear う on the end and not an お.

Thank you! According to the YouTube presenter, this is not a "regular" term per se but rather an onomatopoeia for the bird's call, so the -ao diphthong doesn't necessarily have anything to do with normal sound-shift rules for the older たう spelling of 鳭 (tō) -- though they may be related, with the underlying ZH term possibly also onomatopoeic. See also this YouTube video, where (if it loads right) you should be able to hear a couple of the birds calling, and it does indeed sound like だお.

Spelling

@Suzukaze-c, regarding spellings, Google Books and dictionaries both suggest that the single-character 鴇 spelling is more common than 朱鷺 for the toki reading. There's also the compound 鴇色 (toki iro, “a shade of very pale pink”, named for the very pale pink plumage of the crested ibis).
