Euphemism

So is this a euphemism, as it seems to be? If so, can it be either tagged or mentioned explicitly in the etymology? It seems to be analogous to English powder room.

Or, to ask it a different way, was there an older/original/literal sense (i.e. definition) that literally meant a place for applying makeup, rather than a place for defecation/urination?
