Extension[edit]

@Svartava Although pronouncing दही as [d̪ʱəiː] in Marathi is common but not obligatory, it probably became obligatory in Konkani with the य in धंय being a remnant of the ई. Thus, if there is an extended form *𑀤𑀳𑀺-𑀅 ~ *𑀤𑀳𑀺𑀕 (*dahi-a ~ *dahiga) , Konkani would have been inherited from it as well (Bhagadatta?). Kutchkutch (talk) 10:35, 27 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Kutchkutch: Konkani also deletes final vowels in inherited words. In case धंय is inherited from दधि without any extension, it would be an interesting retention of an old vowel. But what is more likely is the following regular development: Old Indo-Aryan *dádhi-ka -> Middle Indo-Aryan *dahi-a -> Proto Marathi-Konkani *dahī -> Konkani dhãi (with metathesis and spontaneous nasalisation, both regular). (Btw the extensions should be under derived terms, not related terms). -- 𝓑𝓱𝓪𝓰𝓪𝓭𝓪𝓽𝓽𝓪(𝓽𝓪𝓵𝓴) 14:10, 27 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
