Idiosyncratic/Irregular in Etymology

I recently removed the term "idiosyncratic" from the etymology of the word Chapoo. Within the context of Hanyu Pinyin-onlyism, anything not Wade-Giles and not postal romanization must needs be irregular or idiosyncratic. But etymology is not about 21st century beliefs about how a word fits into the scheme of our lives today. Etymology is about the actual origin of a word. Here I find no basis to believe that 19th century users of this term were using an irregular or idiosyncratic term, no more than when they used the term Shanghai, which so happens to be consistent with Wade and Pinyin.
