On the "child" sense, "black" isn't a good enough qualifier. I'm sure the aborigines in Australia don't say this. What about black British people? Or black South Africans? What about black Canadians even? Even African American may not suffice since I doubt this is universal among US black people. It isn't a universal African-American pronunciation, but "chile" is stereotypically an African-American pronunciation. (Same, I suppose, as saying "y'all" is stereotypically Southern [American], when it's used outside the south and not universally there.)

The general term for African-American dialectal English is w:AAVE, though I'm not sure whether the word chile is to be considered part of this, or whether it is a separate tradition (it doesn't "feel" AAVE, but more old-fashioned). —Muke Tever 03:54, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)
