@Mahagaja An IP has been persistently adding a variant of Fionnghall (lenited genitive?) as the etymology. Do you know whether that is correct? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 17:20, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Lingo Bingo Dingo: I don't know how reliable this site is, but the derivation from Old Norse Ingjaldr and Ingólfr (Danish Ingolf) does seem more plausible to me. Although Fhionnghail is the correct lenited genitive (and vocative), Gaelic surnames don't usually get borrowed into English in their lenited form, and Ó Fionnghail is usually anglicized as Finnell or Fennell. —Mahāgaja · talk 18:13, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Mahagaja I've seen the site before; it's not really great, but I don't know the quality of their etymologies (the family crests seem like a scam to me though).
