I'm not sure if the French translation is Nouvelle Zélande or Nouvelle-Zélande. Please correct if wrong. D.D. 22:20 Feb 15, 2003 (UTC)
I've added the archipelago of New Zealand as a second definition. My rationale is firstly that a geographic feature is often not the same as a country, and secondly that some parts of New Zealand (country) don't consider themselves part of New Zealand (archipelago). I'm thinking of Chatham Islanders, who are known for using the term "New Zealand" to refer to the mainland. 202.175.143.143 04:05, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

In the same vein we could have 'New Zeland' meaning the NZ rugby team, cricket team, netball team, chess team, etc etc.
There is a name for this usage as a part of speech, whereby the name of something is substituted for a longer name it represents - so New Zealand substitutes for "The xxx of New Zealand". But I've forgotten the name of that part of speech.--Richardb 02:58, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
