"the" Nile[edit]
I note that many other rivers always preceded by "the" (in English) do not have "the" listed in the definition head. For example, consider the Seine, the Danube, and the Mississippi. This appears to reflect the fact that each of these proper nouns can also refer to something else without "the" (e.g. the state of Mississippi), though the two senses have to be listed under the same definition head (and so can't both have and not have "the"). On the other hand, Amazon#Etymology 2 does have "the". Is there a recommended style concerning this? Rriegs (talk) 16:37, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
What explains the 'e' ending for Nile? Nilus is clearly based on Greek (I suppose), but what happened so that the 'e' ending is preferred in our recent centuries? And are the two forms of equivalent age? --Geographyinitiative (talk) 20:20, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
