Pōwehi

Both Translingual and Hawaiian sections. For Translingual, I doubt both that there is sufficient usage with the macron and that this is truly Translingual at all; for the Hawaiian, I doubt that there is much discussion of black holes. —Μετάknowledge^{discuss/deeds} 02:45, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

I don't know about Hawaiian-language sources. In English, it occurs both with and without the macron, as do all words with diacritics. The NYT uses the macron, as do newspapers in Hawaii. I don't have access to the NYT, so I didn't cite it, but I got two other sources spanning over a year.

But even if we do find Hawaiian-language sources, they're arguably use of the translingual name. kwami (talk) 03:02, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

As our EN and HAW entry etymologies are currently written at Pōwehi, it reads as if we're claiming that the word pōwehi itself was coined by a bunch of haole:

Coined by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope observatory deputy director Jessica Dempsey, Hawaiian language linguist Larry Kimura, and Geoffrey C. Bower, chief scientist of Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics division of Hawai’i.

This is a rather misleading statement, since this word appears in the Kumulipo chant that has been attested in texts since at least the 1700s.

I think it would be more accurate to say that the name Pōwehi was "chosen by", rather than "coined by".

Or we could write, “coined in this sense by ...”, just like the term McGuffin was coined in the sense of a plot device by Hitchcock,^[1] repurposing the existing surname of Samuel McGuffin (1863–1952).  --Lambiam 09:12, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

If this spelling weren't attested, much of the content should be saved by a move to Powehi since Citations:Powehi is cited; however, it appears this may be attested if the citations provided are durably archived. But is there enough use in languages other than English to justify calling it Translingual? - -sche (discuss) 05:44, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

AFAICT there are enough citations to support an English section for the black hole and a Hawaiian section for the mythological concept, but not to support a Translingual section or a Hawaiian section for the black hole. I've changed the entry accordingly. I also created Powehi based on Citations:Powehi. - -sche (discuss) 19:03, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
