Time[edit]

As you can see in, for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_(disambiguation)#Military_and_maritime, Z is synonymous with "UTC" and "GMT". w:Z_(disambiguation)#Military_and_maritime states:

"[Z means] Zulu, the military time zone code for UTC"

Meaning in Russian[edit]

It's now a pro-war symbol for the aggression against Ukraine: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60644832Justin (koavf)TCM 06:26, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Might be translingual rather than Russian, since it's not a Cyrillic letter and I hear western Nazis are also using it. (IDK; our criteria for what is translingual are a little fuzzy; I was just noticing we have two entries in Category:Canadian Translingual.) - -sche (discuss) 21:32, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I only know of sources specifically calling out "Z" in Russian. E.g. https://www.npr.org/2022/03/09/1085471200/the-letter-z-russia-ukraine And as my first source points out, most Russians are familiar with the Latin alphabet (which they do not routinely use for their language, of course). I'm interested in any other sources that point out that "Z" or "Z" in a box, circle, etc. is being used as a catch-all for war-mongering. —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:54, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Most of the attested uses (especially Twitter and Instagram) are in Russian.
Examples: #Zaпобеду (for victory), #Zaмир (for peace), hashtags on Twitter.
