AmE /ˌɑltər ˈiɡoʊ/

According to the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary the canonical AmE is /ˌɑltərˈiɡoʊ/. JMGN (talk) 18:16, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Interesting; I would guess that's because they're cot-caught-merging, but when I tried to check, I noticed that the online Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English gives the UK and US pronunciations (respectively) as /ˌæltər ˈiːɡəʊ, ˌɔːl-/, /ˌæltər ˈiːɡoʊ, ˌɒːl-/, with no /ɑ/ in sight. (/æ/ sounds wrong to me.) Merriam-Webster agrees it's /ɔ/ (in their notation, \ȯ\). Cambridge has /ɑ/ but that's because they merge cot and caught (they give the same pronunciation for caller as for collar), whereas we distinguish those and give the merged pronunciation on a separate line. - -sche (discuss) 20:32, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
