I have experienced the term as an adjective; usually concerning Dadaist art as giving voice to "an atavistic desire to represent the unrepresentable" (source, I think, is the Dali Museum, formerly of Cleveland, OH). This has the feeling of a Greek word. a-not, tavos-??? Someone who knows ancient Greek could be useful here.
