I believe the etymology on this is bana(n) (kapok tree) + ku (yam). The kapok's palmate leaves can be said to resemble those of cassava (which was introduced to Africa from South America). Checking.--A12n (talk) 20:31, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
