In few non english languages dish for soup is refered to as plate (which can be called soup or deep plates). Eventually soup can be served from a bowl which is much deeper than plate but have smaller diameter (hemispherical aspect of the bowl) Recently my english friends rebuked me that soup is always eaten from a bowl not from the plate?! Does anyone know any possible sources of where the names for plate and bowl originated from?
