Because of illness I am unable to get to my Thurneysen or Lewis & Pedersen. I can't ask these giants.

Could someone tell me why this is claimed to be a borrowing from Latin and not a native Celtic word. I don't know enough at all, but here is my thinking -

Surely we would have had PIE e: > ProtoCeltic i: and the ns just simplified to s as has happened so very often (and is still in progress in the Hebrides.) The etymology for Latin cēns- given goes back to a syllabic nasal, why not a lengthened grade version of the first syllable instead for Celtic?CecilWard (talk)
