It seems there are at least 2 theories about the origin of this term.
1. It could be a portmanteau of child + homo(sexual) based on unfortunate and bigoted stereotypes.
2. It could be an abbreviation of "child molestation" from courtroom dockets. So if you see Ch.Mo. listed on the charges or on an inmate's cell door, one might pronounce it as chomo. 2606:A000:8702:2100:58FA:FC03:EF4:D237 18:23, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
- What are your sources? #1 seems unlikely and fanciful. Why not merely from [CH]ild [MO]lester, with vowel inserted for pronunciation? It needn't come from a specific ChMo abbreviation as your #2 claims. Equinox ◑ 19:37, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
- Combine it: It is child molester with homo blended in. Easily imaginable. They talk about child molesters, they talk about homosexuals, the latter are called in a shorter fashion “homos”, so to have a short version for the former they use “chomo”. Else I’d be little concerned about “sources” in relation to prison slang. I mean linguists go into all kinds of barren lands but it is hard to do field studies about language in prison, from all registers of criminals this is the least accessible.
