Although Lewis and Short do cite the Greek as a cognate, it is unfounded to make it a derivative of Greek.

The word palumba exists as a variant (Oscan) (see coquina/popina for other kwo/po variations)

but, beyond this, the root is unclear (kwel = call? callo as pipio = making pip sound? kwel = go forth? celer as travelling bird (french call it standardly a pigeon voyageur)
