Etymology

@ Embryomystic: Its etymology is considerably dubious; but according to Liddle & Scott hypothesis a morphological relation has been drawn up with πυρόω or πυρω, whence πορφύρω (grow dark of the sea, gleam on the shadow side of the wave), alleged to be from the name of the purple fish, whence Ancient Greek πορφύρα (porphúra) is derived; from ΠΥΡ (fire), ultimately from {{etyl|ine-pro|en}} *péh₂wr̥.
