I removed the etymology given on this page because it has no factual support. Could we remove it, and wait for supporting evidence before putting on an etymology? We want correct information, not delightful stories. Please discuss!Jchthys (talk) 00:46, 13 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

I just checked the New Oxford American Dictionary app on my computer, the Online Etymology Dictionary, and the Middle English Dictionary, and they're all consistent with our etymology. If you had checked, you would see that this is a widely-accepted explanation
I can understand why you're suspicious of this etymology, but sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. If people just remove stuff when they're not sure it's right, we end up with only obvious content, and counter-intuitive, but true information is lost. The right way to challenge an etymology is to add {{rfv-etymology}} and use the "+" link in the box it creates to post an explanation to the Etymology scriptorium. Thanks for this clarification. It is indeed strange. (I guess I've just heard too many unbelievable etymologies in my time!) Maybe I'll find a way for it to be made clearer.Jchthys (talk) 01:44, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
PS. I thought I checked my computer dictionary, and must have just not noticed the etymology given there.Jchthys (talk) 01:46, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
