The word "deterrence" is also used in penology, the study of punishment and prevention of crime. Wikipedia's page here defines it as the "theory that the threat of punishment will deter people from committing crime" and make it less likely for people to reoffend should they be re-released into society. In other words, it's the belief that the fear of being caught/jailed scares, or deters, would-be criminals from committing a crime that can earn them jail/prison time. For those who are already imprisoned, "deterrence" is our hope that the harsh conditions of prison will stop them from committing another crime. So no, I do not agree with you that it is limited to the subject of nuclear warfare. Inner Focus (talk) 10:43, 16 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
