Hey Diddle Diddle[edit]

I think an early use of the word is being ignored - assumed to be non-sense rhyme, in the children's rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle". I think the first occurance is a term of endearment for a toddler who toddles or diddles from side-to-side when walking. The second refers to a teeter-totter motion when "the cat" (the constellation Leo) rises while "the fiddle" (Lyra) sets at or about the last full moon of the year. If you interfere with a balance scale you are applying a teeter-totter motion, and cheating someone at the market. The meaning of the rhyme can be deduced from a star chart for London at 2023-12-24 23:59 142.161.228.13 22:53, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
