Shortened from "numerical digit"[edit]

Numerical digit (often shortened to just digit) is a single symbol used alone (such as "1") or in combinations (such as "15"), to represent numbers in a positional numeral system. For example, in the numeral 10.34 (written in base 10), the 0 is immediately to the left of the separator, so it is in the ones or units place, and is called the units digit or ones digit.
