A "doobie" is a slang term used for a marijuana cigarette. The word is derived from the latin term dubiety which could mean 1 : giving rise to uncertainty: questionable or suspect as to true nature or quality. And when you smoke a doobie, it alters your perception, giving you a false sense of reality, leaving things uncertain and questionable. Look at the english root of the word "Dubious". It means doubt, uncertainty or questionable in nature. So Its safe to say a "doobie" is the means of which one will bring uncertainty or perception. thru smoking something that deviates from or perverts the truth. Marijuana.

Your reasoning is absurd. The word could have just as easily arrived from terms like "duplication" "duality" or any other word that starts with "du" or "do". In all likelihood it was probably just made up on the fly by someone who was smoking it, and it doesn't have any significant etymological meaning. You should engage in the consumption of some marijuana, because for a sober person who insists that they have a firm grasp of reality you seem pretty tense, not to mention uneducated.

Actually, I think "dubious" might be considered as a possible origin. Someone could have called it a "dubious cigarette" or so. Purely theoretical, of course. We may never know. The above reasoning is indeed nonsense, though. Kolmiel (talk) 00:09, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Just prior to being so prone to presenting yourself as educated you might want to check your errors. Spelling errors, grammatical errors, wrongly used words. An example might be to not confuse the zoological study of insects (etymology) with the study of the meaning an origin of words (etymology). The repeated phrase "your reasoning is absurd", is something you might want to consider for yourself.

It didn't even refer to anything dubious. For the record, it didn't have anything drugs either. Yet the term went from its original usage to drug slang quickly and seamlessly.

From 1953-1984, there was a children's TV show called Romper Room. I don't remember who the host was in the version I caught from the 1960s, but the show was on PBS. At the beginning, the matronly female host would sing a song. I swear the first lyrics, which have been stuck in my head ever since, were "Buzz, buzz, doobee dance. Buzz, buzz, doobee dance . . ." It had a swinging melody, but I don't remember the rest. It was on early morning before school, and any kid who had a toddler sibling would have heard that song. In fact, they couldn't forget that rift if they tried. (Probably the reason they turned to marijuana.)

Importantly, it was spelled with 2 e's because there was another part of the show where she would contrast doobees with the dontbees. I don't remember anything specific, but the doobees were good little children, and the dontbees, presumably, were the stoners. Things just worked like that in the 60s and 70s.

Teenagers at that time had the song stuck in their head, and with lyrical attachment to the word "buzz" of course they would co-opt the word "doobie."

That's where it came from.
