How did "dough" come to mean "money" (in multiple other languages too)? JodianWarrior (talk) 23:31, 27 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

I would guess it's just a variation on bread, which is another way of saying food, which is another way of saying that which we need in order to live, which money provides. It's not the only such metaphor: in ancient Roman times, soldiers were given a daily ration of salt, and that gave rise to the modern term salary. Chuck Entz (talk) 01:58, 28 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Is the secondary definition of "dough" (money) really dated? One of the quotations is from 2021. How is it determined that a term is dated? BryanKaplan (talk)
