Italo-Romace?[edit]

@Nicodene. I see the (possibly) and have to disprove it, this would give *cī. The 'Common Italian' for Standard Italian ci is "ce". Florentine just raised the -e to -i in monosillables like it's also done in di, ri-, mi, ti etc. and the -i in Sicilian ci is because of the Sicilian vowel system (é > i, ó > u). The Neapolitan cognate entry ce is listed as a direct descendant of ecce, while the Italian and Sicilian entries show hīce or hīcce, from hīc, which is also what Treccani claims. Nevertheless, I do see many dictionaries citing *ecce hīc, and that confuses me. It's a sort of Florentine-centric PoV claiming that the -i was the original vowel and the rest of Italy lowered it. @Catonif Thank you for pointing this out. I'll do a bit of further research and sort out the entries. Nicodene (talk) 08:24, 12 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
